Rifugio Contrin to Rifugio Viel dal Pan
July 8 2008 We left the Rifugio Contrin (2016m – 6614ft) at 7:30a the next morning and hiked up through heather and tamarack forest for a half hour and then scree and boulder slopes for another hour to the Forcela de la Contrin (2896m – 9501ft) (9:00a). Once at the forcela we climbed ladders to an airy traverse with cables for protection and then down a cable for about 300ft to the snowfield on the other side. Once at the snowfield we traversed over snow and around a prominent rocky point at about 2600m – 8530ft. Once around the point we traversed a slab-filled bowl and finally scree ridges to the Rifugio Pian del Fiacconi (2626m – 8615ft) (11:30a) where we stopped for lunch.
