Sarg to Plock P4 90
July 9, 2008 CONCLUSION   The descent from the summit of Piz Boe to the Rifugio Boe was not only scenic but also challenging, as a hiking route. The trail (638) led north alongside the Rifugio Capanna Fassa for a short distance down to the Forcela dai Ciamorces (3110m – 10,203ft). From the forcela the trail dropped off to the northwest and descended slabs and rocky terrain to the head of a deep gully leading steeply down to the broad high plateau of the Gruppo Sella. A cable-protected short traverse led down into the gully and then tight, steep switchbacks led down for 200m – 650ft before the gradient eased for the last few hundred yards to the Rifugio Boe (2872m – 9419ft).

As an aside Katherine and I returned to Piz Boe and the Rifugio Boe in 2009 and were treated to a Classical/Jazz music concert. It was attended by about a thousand people who had hiked from Passo Pordoi to the Rifugio. What a great setting for an outdoor concert!!

The path from the Rifugio Boe (647) led north from the rifugio over rough stony ground defined by cairns and poles. After about a mile the trail intersected with the trail coming up from the Val Lastles (2839m – 9314ft). We continued along the trail marked Dolomitten Hohenweg. A few minutes later and after a short climb we came to the intersection of trail 649 and 666 (2913m – 9557ft). We took the right hand fork (666) and followed the Dolomitten Hohenweg for about ten minutes until it began its steep descent sweeping around the western slopes of the Cima Pisciadu (2985m – 9793ft) down to the shores of the Lago di Pisciadu (2564m – 8412ft).

From the lake we climbed a short distance up the slabs on the trail to the Rifugio Cavazza de Pisciadu (2666m – 8747ft). After a short rest at the rifugio we continued west from the hut on trail 666 for a short distance to the head of a very steep gully leading down to Passo Gardena. This trail was largely steep scree and rocky steps, protected by cables in some sections and tested already sore knees. At the bottom of the gully the trail bore to the left and traversed across rocky and then grassy slopes gradually descending to emerge at the Passo Gardena (2121m – 6959ft). From here Al and I got a ride with a local into the town of Wolkenstein where we spent the night.
