Bolzano to Rifugio Bolzano (Bolzano Hutte)
July 4, 2008 I met my climbing partner Al Errington, late on the night of the 2nd of July, at the train station in Bolzano and we overnighted there and then took a bus the next morning to Lavina Bianca (1175m – 3855ft) where we checked into the Hotel Pine as our starting point for this section. We started out on the morning of the 4th from the Hotel at about 8:10a and walked up the road northeast then took a sharp left after about five minutes onto a farm track heading back west. We passed by numerous farms and pastureland. The track led through forests and meadows and after about an hour and a half we came to the Tschafon Hutte (1733m – 5687ft) (9:30a). After a short rest we continued on the trail toward the Bolzano Hutte. The trail now contoured around the Nigglberg (2164m – 7100ft) and after several miles crossed a rushing stream and began ascending a narrow gorge (10:45a). Parts of the trail were over a planked trail suspended over the stream. After about two miles we emerged from the gorge at M. ga Seggiola (1940m – 6365ft) (12:00 noon). We had lunch here and left at 12:50p, first traversing a broad meadow and then ascending a steep ridge up to the broad upper plateau (2359m –7740ft). From here we crossed the plateau a short distance over to the Bolzano Hutte (2450m – 8038ft). After getting a room at the spacious hutte we hiked around to several small high points and enjoyed our first views of the western Dolomites (Dolomitti).
