Hotel Dolomitenhof to Filmoor Hutte

July 16, 2008 After a restful night at the Hotel Dolomitenhof I had breakfast and left at 8:05a for the two mile hike into the town of Bad Moos (8:30a) and the bus ride up to Passo Montecroce Comelico (1636m – 5367ft) (8:45a).

July 16, 2008 CONTINUATION I left the pass and followed a road, up switchbacks for several miles, steadily gaining altitude until I reached the Rifugio C. ra Rinfreddo (1887m – 6191ft) (10:00a). From here the trail climbed grassy slopes and then rocky switchbacks to the Passo Silvella (Kniebergsattel) (2329m – 7641ft) (11:30a), about a third of a mile south of the Austrian/Italian border.

July 16, 2008 CONCLUSION From the Kniebergsattel the trail continued its steep upward path to an old World War I gun emplacement on the Austrian/Italian border at Sella dei Frugnoni (2539m – 8330ft) (12:00 noon). The trail crossed the Sella dei Frugnoni into Austria and then traversed down rocks and boulders into a heather filled basin at the Obstanser See and the scenic Obstanser See Hutte (2304) ((12:30p). I left the hutte at 1:00p and climbed a steep trail up a gully to the ridge crest and the Austrian/Italian border(2587m – 8487ft) (1:45p) and followed the airy trail to the Pfannspitz (2678m – 8786ft). I continued following the ridge on this grand traverse another hour to the Kleine Kinigat (2672m – 8763ft) (2:30p) and then on past the Gross Kinigat (2689m – 8822ft) (2:45p). From the Gross Kinigat the trail started a downward traverse over to the Forcela dei Cavallino (2453m – 8048ft) (3:15p). From the forcela it was a short but steep and cautious descent into Austria that I made through a boulder filled gully to the Filmoor Hutte (2350m – 7710ft) (3:15p).
