Tilisuna Hutte to Gargellen
July 27, 2007 We got up at 6:30a and packed. Breakfast (frustock) was served at 7:00a and shortly afterward we shouldered our packs and headed out toward Gargellen. Clouds drifted in and out as we crossed grassy pastures above the Tilisunasee. After about a kilometer we came to a fork in the trail near a small tarn. We took the right hand fork which soon rose above the tarn and skirted the base of some limestone crags. The trail twisted and turned through these crags and passed through some narrow clefts before gaining the gap of Gruobenpass (2241m – 7352ft) where there was an abandoned Customs Hut. Staying on the Austrian side of the border we descended briefly to the left and began ascending again over grassy hummocks and around several little tarns as we worked our way up to the head of the valley.
After weaving our way along the edge of the valley the trail made one last push, past another old Customs Hut and on up to Plasserggenpass (2354m – 7723ft) (8:30a) on the Swiss/Austrian border. We rested at the pass for a few minutes and then continued on into Switzerland, traversing the steep southwest slopes of the Sarotlaspitzen (2563m – 8409ft). One section across a band of rock was protected by a fixed cable. A short distance past the cable we gained the Sarotlpass (2389m – 7838ft) (9:00a). From Sarotlpass the route descended 900m – 2953ft to Gargellen, at first taking a series of long loops down a steep hillside before contouring across the right hand slope. The descent then resumed among alpenrose, crossed a gully and made a traverse through thickets of alder. On turning a spur we could see Gargellen below us. After about an hour we reached the farm buildings at Obere Robialpe (1913m – 6276ft). The path led down beside the buildings and cut across the right flank of a spur, then descended more steeply to Untere Robialpe. Another 15 minutes brought us to the Alpenrose Hotel in Gargellen (1423m – 4669ft) (11:00a).
