Arctic Podcast Interview
This video combines audio from the Adventure Science Podcast, anchored by Simon Donato, with Steve’s own photos from his many Arctic expeditions. Donato’s podcast is heard and respected by contemporary explorers who recognize that, in 1977, Trafton was among the first modern explorers to recover remnants of the ill-fated English expedition led by Sir John Franklin.
While searching for a Northwest Passage in 1845, Franklin’s two expedition ships became icebound. And over several years, as they tried to escape their Arctic nightmare, all 129 crew members tragically died.
Nearly 50 years ago, Steve deliberately traveled to King William Island during the winter months, recreated the crews’ below-freezing conditions, and conducted his own research along their escape route. (The hardship that Steve and his companions experienced is also detailed in this podcast.) Steve’s excursions discovered camps, cairns, notes, and objects, and he wrote articles about his discoveries. These reports helped to document the narrative of how the crew died.
The Canadian government located the two sunken ships in 2014 and 2016.
